Good food doesn't have to be difficult…

Hake in Quick Cheese Sauce with Kale and Roast Mini Potatoes

Hake in Cheese Sauce

Some nights you want something quick and easy but seriously tasty!  This Hake dish ticks those boxes, Hake is a member of the Cod family and has a delicate flavour and texture it can however stand up to some serious flavours! I served the hake with some mini roast potatoes and kale, which is something I have never known what to do with until very recently, it’s like a more robust spinach and goes wonderfully well with fish.

  • 2 Hake Steaks
  • A handful of Kale
  • 10 salad potatoes
  • 50g grated cheese (I used mature cheddar)
  • 2 tsp mascarpone
  • A splash or milk
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

Start off by par boiling your potatoes, once they’re half cooked drain them, add some oil and seasoning to the pan and give them a stir around on a high heat.  Transfer them to a pre-heated oven at 200 and leave to roast.

When the potatoes are nearly done, In a bowl, mix together the cheeses, milk and mustard until you get a paste texture.  Put the hake into an oven dish skin side down and put the cheese mixture on top of the fish. Cook the fish in the oven for around 15 minutes. Whilst it’s in there you can cook your kale. Once it’s all done plate up and enjoy!
